0025 joseph panormo violin

    Joseph Panormo Violin, c1820/30

    Joseph Panormo (1768-1837) was the son of Vincenzo Panormo (1734-1813), a luthier born in Palermo. Vincenzo  toured Europe as an instrument maker stopping in Marseille, Paris, London, Dublin, Cork then back to London. Vincenzo had four sons, three of whom ended up in his workshops - Joseph, George (1776-1852) and Louis (1784-1862). Joseph set up his won own shop in 1801 and later worked with his son Edward. The Panormo family we major players in the 19th century English violin making school.


    This violin was made in London around 1820/30 and has a long history in Australia. It was owned by Kitty Smith, the daughter of one of Australia's greatest violin and viola makers, A E Smith. It then moved to Melbourne to be the musical companion of an MSO principal player for many years. It is a stunning violin waiting to taken on its next journey by a talented Australian musician.
