0037 the 'Alan Burke' Fagnola violin 1908

    Fagnola violin, 1908

    Annibale Fagnola (1865 – 1939)

Fagnola is one the most important luthiers from the Turin school which dates back to the early 17th C. Count Cozio di Salubre was based in Turin - he was the worlds first serious violin collector and bought instruments and tools from Stradivari's workshop in the 18th C. Cozio engaged G B Guadagnini to work on his collection - he made over 50 copies of the Strads. The Guadagnini family dominated the Turin lutherie market until well into the 19th C when the next generation came along - Marchetti,  Pressenda, Rocca, Rinaldi and Fagnola.

Young Annibale started his career as a baker then became a self taught luthier influenced by Guadagnini, Pressenda and Rocca. His work is highly prized.

This 1908 violin was sold to Alan Burke, a Sydney professional, by A E Smith in 1948. It has remained in the family for 70 years and is now available to be taken on its next musical journey.
